"Spirits of the Past" - John Walter Museum
1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Sunday, June 27th, 2010
10125 - 97 Avenue
Canada Day and National Aboriginal Day are jointly celebrated as we gather in the beautiful river valley for an afternoon of fun and learning for all ages. Aboriginal culture comes to life as you listen to legends of long ago in the storytelling circle. Costumed interpreters will invite visitors to cook and sample delicious bannock, make a simple craft, and share their knowledge of Edmonton's early history. A roving fiddler provides a lively backdrop to games and races for the children. Event runs rain or shine!

- Guided Historical Walking Tour (departing Museum at 1:30 p.m. and again at 3:00 p.m.) Step back in time with historian Tim Marriott as you learn about Edmonton’s history. The walk of approximately 1 kilometre takes you across the Walterdale bridge to the old Donald Ross School, home of Sun & Moon Aboriginal Artisan Society’s new gallery and cultural centre where visitors can sip mint tea while learning the teachings of an Aboriginal Elder inside the authentic tipi, then craft a deer hide pouch to take home. The gallery will be open for you to enjoy. Make your way back to the Museum for the rest of the afternoon’s activities. Note: Self-guided route map will be available along with a quiz for children to complete along the way to earn a treat.
- Free Cake & Lemonade (1:15 p.m., while supplies last) – Join in as we sing “O Canada” and enjoy a free slice of delicious cake as we celebrate Canada Day early! Collect your free flags and pins and some keepsakes from National Aboriginal Day too!
- Flute & Storytelling (1:45, 2:45 & 3:45 p.m.) - The mystical sounds of the flute will draw you to the storytelling circle where Amanda Woodward shares tales of her heritage.
- Dancers (performance times to be advised) The art of Aboriginal dance will captivate your imagination!
- Bannock (throughout the afternoon) – A costumed interpreter will teach you how to cook bannock on a stick over an open fire. Top your tasty treat with delicious Saskatoon jam! (indoor option if fire ban in effect)
- Pioneer Chores (throughout the afternoon) – A costumed interpreter guides you through some of the many tasks we take for granted today.
- Plant a Bean (throughout afternoon) Children are invited to plant a scarlet runner bean to take home
- Games and Races (throughout the afternoon) – Try traditional favourites such as potato sack & three-legged races, bean bag toss and some games with an Aboriginal theme such as Double Ball and Tug of War!
- “What’s It?” Table – can you guess what some of the items displayed here are really for? Enter for your chance to win a prize.
- Craft Activity* (at Sun & Moon* location on walking tour) Children and adults construct a “one-of-a-kind” deer hide pouch for storing treasures and keepsakes.
- Aboriginal Elder Teachings* (at Sun & Moon* location on walking tour
